How To Repair To A Rusted Above-Ground Pool Wall

An above-ground pool can last for a number of years and only need minimal repairs. Some repairs may be quick and easy, such as patching a liner or changing to a new pump or filter, while others may take a bit more work. A rusted pool wall for instance can cause you problems and can be repaired, but it will take some work on your part to remove the rust and repair the wall. A rusted wall can end up puncturing the pool liner, or it could make the pool unsafe. To make this pool repair, read on for instructions to help you.

Tools And Materials To Get The Job Done:

  • Course and fine grit sandpaper
  • Rust-proof paint (to match your pool walls)
  • Duct tape
  • Drill

Instructions:

  1. Take a look around your pool walls for rust. If the rust is just surface dust, you should be able to repair it. If the rust goes all the way through, the entire pool wall should be replaced, as it is not structurally sound any longer. The pressure from the water in the pool could eventually push through and cause a breakthrough. Anyone swimming in the pool at the time could get hurt. Mark the areas that are rusted and tap it with the end of a screwdriver. If rust is falling off and opens it up to the liner on the other side, replace the pool wall. If it still feels solid, you can repair it.
  2. Once you have the areas marked and know that they can be repaired, take the course grit sandpaper and begin sanding the area down. Remove as much rust as you can. Next, take the fine grit sandpaper to smooth the area. Wipe it clean when finished and allow it to dry.
  3. Using the rust-proof paint (spray or brush on will both work), paint the area to cover the rusted area and prevent further rusting. Apply a second coat after the first coat dries thoroughly.

If you have rusted areas on the inside of the wall, you can repair these areas as well, but you will need to remove the caps around the top of the pool. Then you need to pull back the liner to see the inside of the pool wall. Use the same instructions above to smooth the rusted areas, then paint over it to prevent it from rusting. Allow the paint to dry, then use duct tape to prevent tearing the liner.

If you have rust on your pool walls, make the repair to prevent further damage to your pool. If your pool walls have rusted completely through, replace the pool walls altogether. Call a professional pool repair company for help.
